Ex-49ers Receiver and Indiana Hoosiers Standout Unexpectedly Departs
The San Francisco 49ers are currently dealing with both the aftermath of their Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and the sorrowful passing of one of their former star wide receivers, John Isenbarger
The 76-year-old, recognized as an All-American and IU Hall of Famer, left a lasting impact on the football world.
Isenbarger’s journey began at Indiana University, where he distinguished himself as a tailback and punter during the late 1960s. His stellar performance on the gridiron earned him All-American honors in 1967 and 1969, and he became a key player for Indiana’s Big Ten Co-Championship and Rose Bowl team in 1967. Additionally, he set rushing records and led the Hoosiers in rushing and punting for three consecutive years.
After an impressive college career, Isenbarger entered the professional arena, getting drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 1970 NFL Draft. Initially joining as a running back, he later transitioned to wide receiver during his third year in the league. Over four seasons with the 49ers, he amassed 370 total yards and scored two touchdowns.
Isenbarger’s contributions extended beyond football. In high school, he excelled in football, basketball, and track, earning multiple All-State and All-Conference accolades. His versatility and skills were not limited to the field, as he was named team MVP in football, basketball, and track during the 1965-1966 season.
His impact reached the collegiate level, and he became part of IU’s illustrious sports Hall of Fame. Notably, his achievements were not confined to football, as he also made a mark in bocce, winning the Linear Bocce North American championship in 2018.
The Isenbarger legacy continues with his family, with notable achievements in tennis, high jump, and even a Little 500 cycling championship. John Isenbarger’s contributions to sports at various levels showcase a rich and multifaceted legacy that will be remembered and celebrated by fans and fellow athletes alike.
