Juan Soto and the New York Yankees reached a landmark agreement on Thursday, finalizing a one-year contract worth $31 million. This deal surpasses the previous record held by Shohei Ohtani for the highest arbitration-eligible player salary. The information comes from a source familiar with the negotiations who spoke anonymously as the official announcement had not yet been made.

On the day designated for players and teams to exchange proposed salaries, all 10 eligible Yankees for arbitration successfully secured agreements. Notable among them are Gleyber Torres ($14.2 million), Alex Verdugo ($8.7 million), Trent Grisham ($5.5 million), Clay Holmes ($6 million), Jonathan Loaisiga ($2.5 million), Clarke Schmidt ($2,025,000), Nestor Cortes ($3.95 million), Victor González ($860,000), and Jose Trevino ($2.73 million).

Soto, who had a $23 million salary in his previous full season with the San Diego Padres, has the opportunity to explore free agency after the upcoming season, during which he will turn 26. In the 2023 season, Soto delivered an impressive performance with the Padres, boasting a .275 batting average, 35 home runs, 109 RBIs, and a remarkable .930 OPS. Notably, he joined the Yankees last month after being acquired from the Padres.

Comparatively, Ohtani played the last season under a $30 million, one-year contract with the Los Angeles Angels, a deal settled in October 2022. Following the conclusion of last year’s World Series, Ohtani became a free agent and subsequently signed a groundbreaking $700 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
