The San Francisco 49ers are reviving their traditional approach this offseason, signaling a return to their roots with the addition of Mick Lombardi to their coaching staff.

On Thursday night, NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported that Lombardi would be part of the 49ers coaching lineup for the 2024 season. Although the team has not officially confirmed the news, Coach Kyle Shanahan shared the information with the reporter, refraining from specifying Lombardi’s title for now.

Mick Lombardi previously contributed to the 49ers’ coaching staff from 2013 to 2016, collaborating closely with Jim Harbaugh. With experience at the New York Jets, New England Patriots, and Las Vegas Raiders, Lombardi has held various offensive coaching roles. His most recent position was offensive coordinator under Josh McDaniels in Las Vegas, but he was released mid-season as part of the Raiders’ organizational restructuring.

Mick Lombardi, the son of legendary front-office executive Mike Lombardi, who worked with both Mike Shanahan and the 49ers on separate occasions, brings a wealth of football knowledge to the 49ers.

The specific role held by the younger Lombardi within the 49ers organization is currently undisclosed. The 49ers have undergone a coaching transition this offseason, making changes to both the offensive and defensive units. Nick Sorensen has been promoted to defensive coordinator, and Brandon Staley has been added as the assistant head coach.
