Vikings Secure Extra Draft Pick from Joshua Dobbs Deal
The Minnesota Vikings have scored a small but significant victory, a glimmer of success amid their football endeavors, as reported by Jess Root at Yahoo! Sports. It revolves around the retention of a seventh-round pick, initially part of a trade deal involving quarterback Joshua Dobbs during the previous NFL trade deadline with the Arizona Cardinals.
In the original agreement, the Cardinals were set to send Dobbs along with a conditional seventh-round pick to Minnesota in exchange for a sixth-round pick from the Vikings. The condition attached to the seventh-round pick hinged on Dobbs playing at least 55% of the Vikings’ snaps during his stint with the team. However, Dobbs fell short of this benchmark, ultimately losing his position and failing to fulfill the condition. Consequently, the seventh-round pick, initially destined for Arizona, will remain with the Vikings.
This development boosts the Vikings’ draft capital, bringing their total picks for the upcoming draft to nine. Let’s delve into the breakdown of their selections:
1. First round, pick #11 overall
2. Second round, pick #42 overall
3. Fourth round
4. Fourth round (acquired from Detroit in the T.J. Hockenson trade)
5. Fifth round (received from Cleveland in the Za’Darius Smith trade)
6. Fifth round (obtained from Kansas City in a trade during the 2023 draft weekend)
7. Sixth round (gained from Jacksonville in the Ezra Cleveland trade)
8. Sixth round (secured from Las Vegas via New England in the Vederian Lowe trade)
9. Seventh round
While the specific order of the fourth through seventh-round picks is pending confirmation following the release of compensatory picks by the NFL, it’s evident that the Vikings have bolstered their draft arsenal significantly. Out of the nine picks they possess, only four are original selections, with the remaining five acquired through shrewd trades with other teams, underscoring the Vikings’ strategic approach to enhancing their roster depth.
