Steelers Eye Trade for Chiefs Cornerback

In Pittsburgh, there’s a pressing need for another cornerback to complement Joey Porter Jr., and Kansas City Chiefs standout L’Jarius Sneed appears to be a logical choice. Steelers Now’s Nick Farabaugh reports that the Steelers are actively pursuing Sneed, as a source shared, “The Pittsburgh Steelers have expressed interest in Kansas City Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed.” Recognizing the need to bolster their cornerback lineup, the Steelers view Sneed as a top contender for the position. The rumored cost for acquiring Sneed is a second-round draft pick, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. While the Steelers would absorb Sneed’s $19.8 million franchise tag for the current season, they also have the opportunity to negotiate a long-term contract.

At 27 years old, Sneed boasts an impressive track record with 10 interceptions over his four-year career, including two in the most recent season. His 2023 stats reveal a 51% completion percentage allowed, along with 14 passes defensed and zero touchdowns surrendered. Despite being approximately $13 million under the salary cap before free agency, the Steelers have options to create an additional $16 million through potential releases of Allen Robinson and Patrick Peterson. Beyond these moves, there are various avenues for creating cap space through player cuts and contract adjustments.
