Premier League winner so close to signing for Celtic

After leaving Bristol City in the summer of last year, the right-back had two stints as a free agent before struggling to find a new team.

Being a free agent is never easy, and it gets more difficult when you believe a deal is possible only for it to fall through.

In an interview with Filthy Fellas, Simpson talked about his many attempts over the years to find a new team and related a tale of how, after leaving Leicester, he nearly signed with Celtic.

Simpson nearly joined Celtic.

The right-back talked about how he nearly joined the legendary Scottish team.

“It’s mad, that’s how it works sometimes. I fell out with my agent because something happened with Celtic. That was the one why I turned the other one down. Celtic was on the cards, it was on the table, I spoke to Neil Lennon and everything, it was European football, more trophies, I spoke to Kolo Toure and Brendan about it, that fell through at the end when it was all done, that fell through,” Simpson said.

Worth the risk

To be honest, we can’t blame Simpson if he decided to pursue a move to Celtic Park over other offers that seemed to have been made.

Any footballer in such circumstances would be interested in moving to Celtic. It’s an opportunity to compete in some major games in the biggest competitions in front of a sizable crowd. He was reportedly even given the opportunity to try with the Bhoys.

Simpson has been in a sort of football limbo for a few years now, and he laments not being able to make the transfer to Glasgow, sadly, as this deal never materialised.
