Former Yankees’ Pitcher in trouble

The Baltimore Orioles are in need of a starting pitcher, but their approach seems to prioritize cost-saving over investing in established players, evident in their discussions with Domingo German. Despite initial disinterest, the Orioles are among six teams engaging with German, with two reportedly making offers, as per a New York Post article.

This heightened interest in German is surprising given his tumultuous recent history. His 2023 season concluded on Aug. 3 when he left the New York Yankees to address alcohol abuse issues, which followed a highly publicized incident involving clubhouse property damage. After completing a treatment program, German is seeking a fresh start in 2024 after being non-tendered by the Yankees.

German’s track record with the Yankees includes a 31-28 record, a 4.41 ERA, and a 1.18 WHIP over six seasons. While effective, his career has been marred by injuries, and he hasn’t managed a full season, exceeding 110 innings only once and never surpassing 150.

Despite his durability concerns and off-field issues, the Orioles are actively pursuing German. However, it’s suggested that they should explore other options, especially with notable pitchers like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery still available. While German could provide depth, he may not significantly impact the team. Moreover, the Orioles’ pitching needs might be better addressed by securing a legitimate ace for their rotation, a role German may not fulfill. Despite their familiarity with German from his time in the AL East, the Orioles should consider alternative options to meet their pitching requirements.
