Continuing his recovery journey from a serious injury, Jordan Hicks is poised to make a comeback to the field. The Vikings announced on Saturday that the veteran linebacker has been activated from injured reserve.

After undergoing emergency surgery due to compartment syndrome, Hicks returned to practice this week. This condition led to a six-week absence and initially raised concerns about his availability for the rest of the season. Now, Hicks is set to reclaim his starting role at the second level of the defense. To accommodate his return, Nick Vigil, who filled in during Hicks’ absence, was waived.

Despite setbacks, including injuries to key players like Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson, the Vikings have stayed in the playoff hunt. The loss of Hicks was a setback for the team’s defense, given his significant contribution to the unit. Despite missing several games, the 31-year-old still ranks third on the team in tackles with 87. Hicks has also recorded one interception, one sack, and a fumble returned for a touchdown in his second season with the Vikings.

While there was trade interest in Hicks before the deadline, the Vikings chose not to adopt a seller’s stance, keeping him on the roster. His return is a positive development for Minnesota’s defense, which has received praise, particularly for their recent performances despite a challenging loss to the Bengals last week.

Hicks’ absence led to increased responsibilities for linebacker Ivan Pace Jr., an undrafted rookie who has impressed throughout the season, particularly in the last four games with at least nine tackles in each. Together, Hicks and Pace Jr. aim to contribute to Minnesota’s playoff push as they prepare for two crucial games against the Lions in the final three weeks of the season. Meanwhile, Vigil will be available to sign with the Vikings or any other team if he clears waivers.
