Michigan is in the process of negotiating a substantial contract extension with the aim of retaining Jim Harbaugh as the head coach of the Wolverines until the 2028 season, as per various reports. The potential five-year agreement, valued at $55 million, was initially disclosed by Richard Johnson and, if finalized, would position Harbaugh as the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten and second-highest in college football, trailing only Nick Saban of Alabama.

Although the contract has not been officially concluded, and Harbaugh has not committed to an extension at Michigan, he remains under an existing contract with the Wolverines.

These discussions coincide with Harbaugh leading Michigan into its third consecutive College Football Playoff, with the Wolverines aiming for their first national championship since 1997. Despite facing suspension for six games during the seasonβ€”three as a precaution by the university against potential NCAA penalties and three by the Big Ten in response to an NCAA investigation into sign stealingβ€”Michigan has consistently supported Harbaugh throughout both controversies.

Rumors of Harbaugh considering a move to the NFL have emerged in the last two offseasons, and recent speculations suggest that certain NFL teams, particularly the Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers, are exploring Harbaugh as a coaching candidate. Harbaugh, a former quarterback for the Bears from 1988 to 1993, started 63 games during that period.

Under Harbaugh’s leadership, the Wolverines have secured three consecutive Big Ten titles and victories over rival Ohio State for three consecutive years. Harbaugh’s overall record in Ann Arbor is 82-25 (60-17 in the Big Ten), with an undefeated 13-0 record thus far in 2023.

Harbaugh, with coaching stints at San Diego (2004-2006) and Stanford (2007-2010) before joining Michigan in 2015, holds an overall coaching record of 142-52. Additionally, he coached the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014, leading the team to the playoffs three times and reaching Super Bowl XLVII, where they were defeated by the Baltimore Ravens, coached by Harbaugh’s brother, John Harbaugh. Harbaugh’s coaching career has not been without controversy, as he faced suspensions during the 2023 season amid ongoing NCAA investigations into recruiting and coaching infractions, as well as an elaborate sign-stealing operation conducted by a Michigan staffer. Both investigations are still ongoing.
