Ex-Alabama star Caleb Downs commits…

Alabama safety Caleb Downs has reportedly made his decision on the next team he will join. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the standout from the Crimson Tide has committed to Ohio State.

Following the retirement of the legendary Alabama coach Nick Saban, Downs, a true freshman, became one of the most significant non-quarterbacks to enter the transfer portal. Despite the ups and downs of the past season for the Crimson Tide, Downs had an immediate impact on the team.

Initially, it was anticipated that Downs would choose Georgia, Alabama’s SEC rival, especially after Georgia hired Downs’ defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson as their co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach. However, he ultimately opted for Ohio State.

In the recently concluded season, the 19-year-old safety played a crucial role for Alabama, leading the team with 107 total tackles, which was more than 50% higher than the runner-up’s total of 67 tackles, belonging to Deontae Lawson. Additionally, Downs secured the second spot on the team with 2 interceptions.

Ohio State fans can take comfort in the fact that Downs showcased his effectiveness during Alabama’s College Football Playoff loss to Michigan earlier this month. In that game, he led his team with 8 tackles and nearly began the game with an interception against Wolverines quarterback JJ McCarthy, although it was ultimately nullified.

Downs is not the only high-profile player choosing to move away from Alabama recently. The Crimson Tide has seen the departure of several top players and recruits following Nick Saban’s retirement.
