The Yankees have reached an agreement for a major league contract with right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet, according to information obtained by The Post. The finalization of the deal was contingent on Poteet passing a physical examination.

Poteet, who previously played for the Marlins in 2021-22, posted a 4.45 ERA in 19 games, including nine starts. Following Tommy John surgery in August 2022, he signed a two-year minor league contract with the Royals. However, his participation was limited to just one minor league game in late September 2023.

Kansas City signed the two-year deal with the intention of rehabilitating Poteet in 2023 and potentially having him as a major league option in 2024. An understanding existed between the Royals and Poteet, allowing him to opt out of the second year if he wasn’t selected in the December Rule 5 draft or added to the 40-man roster afterward.

Kansas City’s decision not to include Poteet on the 40-man roster was influenced by a full roster and the acquisition of Matt Sauer from the Yankees in the Rule 5 draft. The Yankees, seeking to enhance their pitching staff depth, made several moves, including trading Michael King, Jhony Brito, Drew Thorpe, and Randy Vasquez for Juan Soto and Trent Grisham. They also lost Mitch Spence to Oakland and saw Sauer selected as the first two picks in the Rule 5 draft.

With all three of his options available, Poteet can be shuttled between the majors and minors by the Yankees as needed to bolster their pitching staff depth during the season.
