Cleveland Browns Offensive Coordinator Alex Van Pelt has confirmed that quarterback Jeff Driskel will serve as the backup to Joe Flacco in the upcoming 2024 NFL Playoffs.
The decision to choose Jeff Driskel over P.J. Walker as the backup likely stems from Driskel’s overall mobility and his familiarity with Kevin Stefanski’s offensive system. Driskel has previous experience with former Browns Quarterback Coach Drew Petzing in Arizona, providing him with a solid understanding of the offensive structure still in place under the current coaching staff.
Additionally, Driskel possesses a stronger arm and is capable of making throws that Walker may struggle with consistently, particularly on out-breaking routes.
Driskel took the field as the starting quarterback in the regular-season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals, completing 13 of 26 passes for 166 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He also showcased his running ability with 7 rushing attempts for 33 yards. Based on his performance in that game, the coaching staff decided to designate him as Flacco’s backup for the playoffs.
Throughout the season, Walker appeared in six games for the Browns, including two starts.
