Yankees Show Signs of Shifting Stance on All-Star Free Agent

The New York Yankees are now strongly considering signing veteran right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman in free agency, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network. Recent discussions between the Yankees and Stroman have reportedly been productive, marking a shift in the team’s stance. Despite initial reports last week of Stroman expressing “serious interest” in joining the Yankees, the team had not reciprocated until now.

Following the acquisition of Juan Soto in a major trade with the San Diego Padres last month, the Yankees have been cautious in their spending decisions. Cody Poteet is the only free agent signed to their MLB roster, signaling a deliberate approach in considering other prominent free agents.

While Stroman, an All-Star with the Chicago Cubs last year, may not be a perfect fit due to a low whiff rate, fewer innings pitched, and past maturity concerns (including public remarks against the Yankees), the team, thin on proven right-handed pitchers behind Gerrit Cole, seems to view Stroman as a viable middle-ground option.
