Vikings General Manager Issues Statement Regarding Kirk Cousins’ Future

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is set to enter free agency in the upcoming offseason, a matter addressed by General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah during his end-of-season media session. When questioned about the possibility of bringing back Cousins for the next season, Adofo-Mensah affirmed his desire to retain the quarterback.

“I’ve said that [he wanted Cousins back],” stated Adofo-Mensah on January 10. “I’ve been pretty consistent with that. Kirk, the player, is somebody that we saw what he does to this team. I thought we were playing really good football before he got injured, and it’s the most important position in sports. It’s certainly my intention to have him back here.”

However, Adofo-Mensah acknowledged that any new deal would need to be mutually beneficial for both parties. The Vikings currently have approximately $39 million in cap space, according to Spotrac. Projections for Cousins’ next contract range from $35 to $40 million, potentially placing additional financial strain on the team. Despite differing opinions, including former Viking star Jared Allen advocating for Cousins’ departure, the quarterback himself emphasized that, at this stage of his career, financial considerations are not the primary focus.

“God has blessed me financially beyond my wildest dreams, so at this stage of my career, the dollars are really not what it’s about,” remarked Cousins during his end-of-season availability. “I think it ultimately is about winning football games — and so that will be the most important thing, winning football games.”
