Vikings Eye Blockbuster Trade as Cousins Replacement, Insider Spills!

During the week leading up to the Super Bowl, ESPN raised speculation that the Minnesota Vikings might be considering a move to trade up to the third overall pick in the forthcoming NFL draft as a potential replacement for Kirk Cousins. This speculation was subsequently confirmed by KSTP’s Darren Wolfson.

Wolfson reported on February 22 that the Vikings initiated discussions with the New England Patriots regarding a possible trade while attending the Senior Bowl, which took place in Mobile, Alabama, the week prior to the Super Bowl.

During an episode of SKOR North’s “Mackey and Judd” podcast, Wolfson explained, “Down in Mobile, there was a seed planted, with New England, by the Vikings. That seed was planted in terms of ‘Hey, is there even any interest on your front to move off that number 3 pick?'”

While Wolfson clarified that these discussions haven’t progressed further, it’s evident that the Vikings are exploring potential blockbuster moves during the draft amidst ongoing speculation surrounding their quarterback situation.

Wolfson emphasized that talks between the two teams have not progressed beyond initial inquiries. However, with the NFL Scouting Combine scheduled to commence on February 26, it presents an opportunity for the Vikings to revisit all potential avenues ahead of the impending free agency period starting on March 13.

The Vikings have historically been cautious in drafting quarterbacks, never selecting one within the top 10 picks. However, there is growing anticipation that this trend could change, especially if the Vikings, who currently hold the 12th overall pick, manage to orchestrate a trade.

According to Star Tribune beat reporter Ben Goessling, there’s a stronger likelihood of the Vikings actively pursuing a quarterback in the draft rather than waiting for a prospect to fall to them outside the top 10.

The ongoing negotiations between the Vikings and Cousins regarding a contract extension have yet to yield a definitive agreement, with both parties expected to continue discussions leading up to the start of free agency in March.

Cousins himself expressed a desire for clarity but acknowledged the uncertainties that come with contract negotiations during an exclusive interview with Heavy’s Jonathan Adams during Super Bowl week. The situation remains fluid, with both parties navigating the process as free agency approaches.
