A surprising twist in the NRL transfer saga has thrust the New Zealand Warriors into the spotlight as the front-runners to secure the services of premiership-winning Brisbane Broncos star Kurt Capewell.

A linchpin in the Penrith Panthers’ triumphant 2021 Grand Final campaign, the Queensland Origin representative may be on the verge of a major career move before the upcoming season kicks off.

Despite being under contract until the culmination of the 2024 season, speculation is rife that the New Zealand Warriors are actively pursuing Kurt Capewell, dangling a tempting three-year deal to lure him away, according to reports by News Corp.

Fueling the rumors, sightings of Capewell having dinner with Andrew Webster at Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour surfaced on Friday night. Further intensifying the speculation, it’s revealed that the player is scheduled to tour the Warriors’ facilities over the weekend in Auckland.

This development aligns with the Warriors’ strategic move to fortify their forward lineup, especially in the wake of Josh Curran’s departure to the Canterbury Bulldogs and the impending exit of Addin Fonua-Blake at the end of the upcoming season.

Should this move materialize, Capewell would join the ranks of Warriors’ leadership alongside Shaun Johnson, Tohu Harris, and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck. This potential shift could also reshape the team’s dynamics, pushing Marata Niukore to the front row instead of his customary edge position.

While Capewell has enjoyed success in his career, a stay at Red Hill could see him competing for playing time against the rising stars of Brisbane’s second-row, Brendan Piakura and Jordan Riki, who recently committed to the club until 2027.

Adding an intriguing layer to the narrative is Capewell’s close relationship with Warriors coach Andrew Webster, a bond forged during their time together at Penrith as player and coach, respectively.

If the move eventuates, it not only transforms the Warriors’ lineup but also provides the Broncos with a valuable opportunity to free up salary cap space. This strategic move aligns with Brisbane’s plans to secure the futures of burgeoning talents Ezra Mam and Reece Walsh, who are poised for lucrative contract extensions.
