Michigan secured a spot in the College Football Playoff national title game by defeating Alabama 27-20 in overtime at the Rose Bowl. This marks Michigan’s first-ever win in the college football playoff. The pivotal moment came in the first overtime possession when Blake Corum’s 17-yard touchdown run gave Michigan a 27-20 lead. A crucial defensive stand on fourth-and-three sealed the historic victory.

Coach Jim Harbaugh expressed his joy, calling the game “glorious” and emphasizing the unbreakable spirit of his team throughout the challenging year. The Wolverines, with a record of 14-0, will face second-seeded Washington (14-0) in the national title game, aiming for their first championship since 1997.

Despite trailing 20-13 late in the fourth quarter, Michigan orchestrated a 75-yard drive, resulting in a 4-yard touchdown pass from JJ McCarthy to Roman Wilson. McCarthy, who earned Offensive Player of the Game, threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns. The drive included a crucial fourth-and-2 conversion and a 29-yard pass, setting up the Wolverines for the game-tying touchdown.

The game had its tense moments, with a fumbled punt return in the final minute of regulation. However, Michigan managed to escape safety territory, preserving their chance in overtime. Harbaugh credited his team’s toughness and physicality for the epic win, highlighting the remarkable togetherness of the players.

McCarthy’s top targets were Wilson and Tyler Morris, while Corum contributed with a touchdown catch and a rushing touchdown. Morris’ impressive 38-yard touchdown catch gave Michigan a 13-7 lead in the second quarter.

The Crimson Tide gained momentum in the third quarter, but Michigan’s defense held strong. Alabama took a 20-13 lead in the fourth quarter, but Michigan fought back, ultimately prevailing in overtime.

Michigan’s journey to the championship game has been marked by resilience, overcoming a messy season that included suspensions for Coach Harbaugh. Harbaugh expressed his team’s determination to overcome challenges and emphasized their focus on the ultimate goal.

Despite the disappointment for Alabama, Coach Nick Saban acknowledged the remarkable season and accomplishments of his team. Michigan, as the No. 1 seed, is now on the verge of fulfilling Harbaugh’s goal of restoring the school to national prominence and dominance, capping off an elite run since 2021 with three consecutive conference titles and three Playoff appearances.
