A Former Michigan State Football Star Emerges Victorious as Top Assistant Coach

Phil Parker, the seasoned defensive coordinator and secondary coach for Iowa, has achieved a monumental milestone by clinching the prestigious 2023 Broyles Award. This outstanding honor places him above 14 other semifinalists, including Michigan’s offensive coordinator, Sherrone Moore.

Iowa’s head coach, Kirk Ferentz, expressed his elation, stating, “Phil Parker is an incredible football coach, and I am extremely pleased that he has been recognized for his career success by the Broyles Committee.” Ferentz emphasized Parker’s crucial role in the program’s success, highlighting his dedication and leadership since 1999.

Parker’s football journey extends beyond his coaching career, as he was a defensive standout for the Spartans, earning First-Team All-Big Ten honors and defensive MVP titles at Michigan State in the ’80s.

Iowa Football: Phil Parker raves about Hawkeyes' 2022 leadership

Under Parker’s defensive guidance, the Hawkeyes have consistently excelled. The team’s remarkable statistics, such as allowing just 15 touchdowns in 13 games and ranking fourth nationally in points per game (13.2), showcase Parker’s exceptional coaching prowess. The defense has maintained a streak of allowing 400 yards or fewer in 27 consecutive games, marking the longest active streak in the nation.

Despite speculation linking him to Michigan State’s open defensive coordinator position, Parker, who earns approximately $1.4 million, has not indicated any interest in the role. As Iowa gears up for the Citrus Bowl against Tennessee on January 1, the football world eagerly anticipates Phil Parker’s continued impact on the game.
