Andrew Bailey employs a comprehensive approach to evaluating pitchers, leaving no aspect overlooked.

During an interview with NESN’s Tom Caron on the first day of spring training, the Boston Red Sox’s new pitching coach discussed various aspects of his methodology for assessing and nurturing pitchers.

Bailey emphasized the importance of looking at pitchers through multiple perspectives, including biomechanics, pitch usage, pitch shape, and overall pitching arsenal. He highlighted that improving pitching performance isn’t always about adding new pitches; sometimes, it involves removing certain pitches and relying more on existing strengths.

He stressed the significance of understanding metrics like strikeout rates, walk rates, and damage caused by opponents, tailoring the approach based on specific areas that need improvement, such as reducing damage against left-handed hitters or increasing strikeout rates against right-handed hitters.

Bailey’s approach appears to be thorough and meticulous, underscoring the commitment of both him and the Red Sox pitchers to optimize performance.

Boston’s full-squad practice is set for the upcoming Monday, followed by an exhibition game against Northeastern University on Friday. The Red Sox will then officially kick off their spring training schedule with a game against the Baltimore Orioles the following Saturday.
