Brendan Rodgers and his Celtic team found solace after their Champions League loss to Lazio in Rome with a visit to Pope Francis at the Vatican.

Following their 2-0 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico, the Pontiff offered words of support to the Hoops. Parkhead chairman Peter Lawwell, manager Rodgers, the entire team, and additional staff members journeyed to St. Peter’s Basilica before flying back to Glasgow. During their visit, they presented the Pope with a signed Celtic shirt.

The 86-year-old leader of the Catholic Church, despite apologizing for having a cold that risked the planned meeting, welcomed them warmly: “I am glad to receive you here at the Vatican during your stay in Rome after your UEFA Champions League match with Lazio yesterday evening. While winning is preferred over losing, it’s not the primary aspect. What matters more is the example you set, on and off the field, embodying virtues like courage, perseverance, generosity, and respect for the God-given dignity of others.”

He recognized Celtic Football Club’s founding in 1887 with the goal of aiding Glasgow’s impoverished, highlighting the changes in the football world and the increased financial focus. The Pope urged the team to remember their club’s charitable origins, emphasizing the responsibility they bear as role models, especially for young people. He stressed the importance of personal integrity, encouraging them to be known not just for their football prowess but also for their kindness and stewardship of their societal privileges.

Concluding with a prayer for the team to uphold the noble aspects of sportsmanship, he invoked divine blessings upon them.
