O’Connell: Kirk Cousins Deserves Free Agency!
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell recently described Kirk Cousins as a “process guy” and acknowledged that Cousins has “earned the right to be a free agent,” hinting that a deal to retain the experienced quarterback in Minnesota may not materialize before Cousins explores his options in free agency.
During an interview with Rich Eisen on NFL Network at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, O’Connell provided insights into his discussions with Cousins, suggesting that Cousins will indeed enter the free agency market.
“I know (Cousins), where he’s at in this whole process. He’s earned the right to be a free agent and he’s played really good football,” O’Connell stated. “… I know (Cousins is) going to go through a full process. He’s a process guy. And hopefully we continue to be a strong part in that process and we figure out a way to keep him a Minnesota Viking, but my expectation is we’re not going to be the only ones that would like Kirk Cousins to be the quarterback of our team in 2024.”
Cousins, aged 35, was enjoying a career-high performance before his season was cut short by a torn Achilles tendon after eight games. He showcased impressive stats, completing 69.5% of his passes and throwing for 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns, and only five interceptions during that period.
Speculation about Cousins’ future with the Vikings has been circulating, particularly with his impending free agency. Various teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, and others, have emerged as potential suitors for the veteran quarterback.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic mentioned in her column that the Falcons are being closely watched as a potential contender for Cousins. The Falcons reportedly view Cousins as the type of quarterback who could elevate them from a fringe playoff team to a serious contender. Similar sentiments may be shared by other interested teams.
According to DraftKings Sportsbook, the Vikings are currently favored at -250 to re-sign Cousins as of March 1, with the Falcons trailing closely behind at +330. Other teams in contention include the New England Patriots (+800), Pittsburgh Steelers (+1000), Raiders (+1000), and Denver Broncos (+1500).
