Is Coventry City Secretly Hoarding a Tiny Goldmine?

Coventry City experienced significant financial gains from the summer sales of Viktor Gyokeres and Gus Hamer, who moved to Sporting Lisbon and Sheffield United, respectively, accumulating over £30 million. To bolster the squad, Mark Robins promptly secured the signing of Ellis Simms from Everton on a four-year deal, making him the potential future star generating substantial profits for the club.

Simms, recruited in the summer of 2023 for a reported fee that could reach £8 million with add-ons, struggled initially to replicate his goal-scoring form. After showcasing his capabilities during a loan spell at Sunderland, where he scored seven goals in 17 games, Simms faced a 10-game drought before netting twice against Queens Park Rangers in September.

While it took 16 more matches for him to score against Swansea City in December, Simms has hit top form since the New Year, scoring nine goals in his last ten appearances, including hat-tricks against Maidstone United and Rotherham United. With a remarkable efficiency of 1.22 shots on target per 90 minutes, Simms ranks among the top ten Championship players in this aspect.

The striker’s resurgence coincides with the return of Callum O’Hare, contributing to Coventry’s push for a top-six finish. The success of players within Robins’ team structure emphasizes their potential for significant transfers. However, Coventry may face challenges in retaining Callum O’Hare, who has yet to sign a new contract, making him a potential free agent sought after by several Premier League clubs.
