Bruins Set to Part Ways with Oskar Steen, Report Says

The Boston Bruins have begun their offseason roster adjustments by parting ways with forward Oskar Steen, as confirmed by his agent Joakim Persson to Swedish news outlet Värmlands Folkblad, following communication from the Bruins that they will not be re-signing him. Steen, who saw a career-high 34 games with the Bruins during the 2023-24 season, managed just one point and was placed on waivers in February without being claimed, subsequently finishing the season with AHL Providence.

At 26 years old, Steen qualifies as a Group 6 unrestricted free agent (UFA), having played a total of 60 NHL games across four seasons since his debut with the Bruins in 2021. Drafted in the sixth round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, he primarily served as a depth forward in Boston, tallying eight points with four goals over his tenure.

Considering his limited NHL production and lack of interest on waivers, Steen’s prospects for securing a new NHL contract appear slim, making an AHL deal or exploring opportunities overseas more realistic for him in the upcoming free agency period. Alongside Steen, defenseman prospect Reilly Walsh and goalie prospect Kyle Keiser also fall into the Group 6 UFA category for the Bruins.

As they prepare for NHL free agency commencing on July 1, the Bruins are currently projected to have approximately $23.86 million in salary cap space, according to Puckpedia.
