The Cleveland Browns are actively refining their roster, with a focus on bolstering the offensive side of the football.

According to a report by Scott Petrak of Browns Zone on Tuesday, November 28, the team made adjustments to their practice squad, particularly in the running back position. Petrak mentioned the re-signing of RB John Kelly Jr. to the practice squad, along with the release of RB Kenyan Drake. Additionally, CB Thomas Graham Jr. was waived from IR.

John Kelly Jr., Browns

John Kelly Jr., who has been part of Cleveland’s practice squad multiple times this season, is no stranger to the team. Despite having appeared in just one offensive snap over the past two years and playing 43 regular-season snaps on special teams, his familiarity with the Browns’ offense and locker room likely influenced the team’s decision.

In contrast, Kenyan Drake, signed on October 31, brought more extensive NFL experience to the table, having played in 103 games and started 44 contests during his eight-year career, accumulating 3,866 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns. However, the Browns seem to have opted for Kelly’s familiarity and experience within the team.

The roster adjustments may seem minor, but the addition of Kelly could prove crucial, especially considering the injuries faced by key running backs Jerome Ford and Kareem Hunt. Pierre Strong Jr., the Browns’ third-string running back, has performed reasonably well in that role. However, the team needs a reliable replacement in case of injuries to any of the top three backs, as reflected in the importance of the third-string running back position and its backup on the practice squad.

Moreover, Strong also serves as the primary kickoff returner, adding another layer of significance to his role. In the event of his absence, the team would need a suitable replacement, and John Kelly Jr. emerges as a potential option, despite not having a regular history as a return man in the NFL. The strategic considerations behind these roster moves highlight the Browns’ commitment to maintaining depth and readiness for various scenarios as they navigate the remainder of the season.
