After enduring two consecutive last-place finishes, Boston Red Sox fans have been vocal about their desire for the team to acquire a top-tier starting pitcher. The potential candidates in free agency include left-handed pitchers Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, either of whom could significantly enhance the Red Sox’s pitching staff.

While the prospect of adding Snell or Montgomery is enticing, the team’s Chief Baseball Officer, Craig Breslow, seems more optimistic about exploring options in the trade market. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Breslow and the Red Sox front office are actively considering trade possibilities after trading Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves.

Passan mentioned that the Red Sox are particularly interested in a rising star from the Miami Marlins, with the Marlins being open to trade discussions for most players except right-hander Eury Perez. Among the Marlins’ assets, left-hander Jesús Luzardo stands out as a valuable option, even surpassing NL batting champion Luis Arraez. Luzardo, who boasts a 3.58 ERA, a 208-to-55 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a .239 batting average against, and a 1.21 WHIP in 178 2/3 innings last season, could be a significant addition to the Red Sox rotation for the next three seasons.

The 26-year-old Luzardo is seen as a promising talent who, alongside Brayan Bello, could form a formidable pitching duo in Boston, complemented by veteran support. The potential acquisition aligns with the team’s strategy, especially with the emergence of Vaughn Grissom as the expected primary second baseman for the upcoming season, potentially paving the way for a trade involving Boston’s deep pool of middle infield prospects.

In addition to Luzardo, Breslow reportedly has an eye on outfielder Teoscar Hernández, who is likely to sign soon. Securing Hernández could lead to the possibility of outfielders Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, or, more likely, Ceddanne Rafaela becoming available for trade.

If Breslow aims for one more impactful move in the trade market, Luzardo emerges as the frontrunner for the Red Sox’s attention.
