The Boston Red Sox have inked a minor-league deal with free-agent southpaw Jorge Benitez, according to a report from MiLB Central on X/Twitter. As part of the agreement, Benitez has also received an invitation to major-league spring training.

Originally chosen by the Seattle Mariners in the ninth round of the 2017 amateur draft, Benitez began his professional journey with a debut in the rookie-level Arizona League in June of that year after signing a $150,000 contract. His standout performance in the Arizona Fall League in 2022, where he earned All-Star honors with a 2.08 ERA in nine appearances, caught the attention of many.

During the 2022 season, Benitez played for both Low-A Modesto and High-A Everett, before impressively earning a promotion to Double-A Arkansas in late April. His stint with the Travelers showcased his prowess, with a 2.14 ERA and 4.24 FIP in 40 bullpen outings covering 59 innings.

While Benitez’s strikeout metrics were noteworthy, ranking among the top in various categories, he faced challenges with command, showing higher walk rates. Despite this, his unique pitching style, featuring a 90-93 mph fastball and a high-spin curveball, positions him as a potential low-leverage reliever.

At just 24 years old, Benitez joins the Red Sox’s growing pool of young left-handed pitchers, following the recent signing of Helcris Olivarez. Both pitchers are expected to bolster Boston’s pitching depth at Triple-A Worcester in the upcoming 2024 season.

In the current offseason, Benitez has been showcasing his skills in the Puerto Rican Winter League with the Criollos de Caguas. Impressively, he had not allowed a run through his initial six appearances, covering 7 2/3 innings, as of the latest update on Friday.
