In return for the pair and pick 16, the Demons will be acquiring pick 5 and 26 in the transaction, enhancing their draft position ahead of the AFLW Draft scheduled for December 18.

Melbourne AFLW List Manager Todd Patterson emphasized the significance of the trade and the favorable position it establishes for the club.

West and Sherriff depart Dees

β€œWe are highly satisfied with the outcome of this deal; it aligns well with our strategy of targeting the top end of this year’s draft,” stated Patterson.

He further noted the historical challenge of ascending the draft order in the AFLW competition through such means, making this deal particularly valuable for the club.

Casey West, who transitioned from basketball to play 36 games for the red and blue, joined the Demons in 2021. In the past season, her third with the club, she participated in eleven matches.

Eliza Sherriff became a part of Melbourne in 2019, accumulating 48 games over six seasons, including ten appearances in 2023.

Patterson expressed gratitude to the departing players for their contributions to the club, acknowledging the unique journeys of both athletes.

β€œCasey came to us through an unconventional path by replacing Daisy Pearce when she was pregnant, and she fought hard through the early years of her career to establish herself,” he said.

β€œLikewise, Eliza had never considered playing football in her life until we tracked her down during COVID. To be able to achieve what she has to date is a real credit not only to Eliza but also the program.

β€œTo play a small part in someone’s journey is very special, and we hope this move is a positive one for her.

β€œWe wish the departing players well and look forward to celebrating with them at premiership reunions in years to come.”

As of now, Melbourne holds picks No.5, 26, 35, 56, and 74 leading up to the Draft later this month.
