The Boston Red Sox are facing numerous needs this offseason, with a particular emphasis on acquiring front-end starting pitching. However, addressing the significant gap at second base is also a priority.

During this week’s winter meetings, the Red Sox did not make any noteworthy additions to their major league roster, but rumors have circulated regarding potential targets.

According to recent reports from The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey, there are indications that the Red Sox are considering three-time All-Star Whit Merrifield as a potential solution to fill the void at second base.

“According to two people with knowledge of the situation, the Red Sox have considered Whit Merrifield and touched base with his representatives,” McCaffrey reported. “Still, talks have been largely preliminary with no current traction toward a deal, though that could change as the market begins to move, and the Red Sox settle on a more definitive direction.”

Despite entering his age-35 season, Merrifield appears to be a sensible fit for Boston. He delivered a strong performance last season with the Toronto Blue Jays, boasting a .272 batting average, 11 home runs, and 67 RBIs, along with 26 stolen bases.

Beyond his offensive contributions, Merrifield is known for his defensive capabilities in the middle infield, offering versatility by being able to play all three outfield positions. According to McCaffrey, Merrifield posted a positive four outs above average at second base, despite a minus-4 defensive runs saved. Additionally, he committed only four errors in 251 chances at second base.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow acknowledged earlier in the week that executing a trade might be the most likely route for securing a starting second baseman. However, he did not rule out the possibility of acquiring one through free agency.

Presently, the Red Sox have Pablo Reyes and Enmanuel Valdez as the top names on the second base depth chart. The addition of Merrifield would undoubtedly represent an upgrade over these options. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
