Tony Stewart Confirms Eldora Speedway Is Not for Sale
Former NASCAR driver Tony Stewart has officially debunked rumors regarding the sale of Eldora Speedway, the iconic half-mile dirt racing facility in Rossburg, Ohio. Stewart, who purchased the track in 2004 from legendary promoter Earl Baltes, reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining ownership of the venue during a FloRacing broadcast in June.
Speculation about the track’s sale arose following news of the impending closure of Stewart-Haas Racing, Stewart’s NASCAR team. Addressing the rumors, the three-time NASCAR champion said:
> “I don’t know who was really bored and thought they would play a nice practical joke at home, but this track is not sold and it is not for sale. This is a tradition with Earl and Berneice (Baltes) that they started back in 1954 that we’re proud to be owners of this race track. It’s something that we’re passionate about. This track is not for sale. It’s not sold. It’s ours. And we plan on keeping it for a long time.”
Eldora Speedway has been a cornerstone of dirt track racing since its establishment in 1954. Originally built as a quarter-mile dirt track by Earl Baltes, the venue expanded to its current half-mile configuration and gained fame for hosting prestigious events, including the World 100, Kings Royal, and Dirt Late Model Dream.
The track also boasts a rich history, hosting its first USAC Sprint Car race in 1962 and the inaugural World of Outlaws event in 1978. In 2001, Eldora Speedway made headlines with the richest short-track race in history, offering a $1 million prize.
Leadership Transition at Eldora Speedway
In September, Stewart appointed Levi Jones as the new general manager of Eldora Speedway. Jones, a USAC Hall of Famer and six-time USAC champion, previously served as the director of the Indy NXT Series at Penske Entertainment. He succeeded Jerry Gappens, who tragically passed away earlier this year.
Stewart praised interim general manager Jonathan Bateman for his contributions during the leadership transition:
> “I want to especially thank Jonathan Bateman, who has worn nearly every hat and done every job at Eldora since joining us in 2006. He became our interim general manager after Jerry passed, and he had less than two weeks to get ready for one of our biggest races, the Dirt Late Model Dream. He was an absolute pro, and the Dream and our summer slate of racing wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the experience and work ethic Jonathan brings to Eldora every day.”
Jones’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Speedway, with Stewart emphasizing his commitment to preserving its legacy while ensuring its continued success under experienced leadership.
About Eldora Speedway
Eldora Speedway remains a beloved venue for racing enthusiasts, drawing fans from around the world to its signature events. Stewart’s dedication to upholding the tradition established by Earl and Berneice Baltes underscores the track’s importance as a cornerstone of American motorsport.
