Brandon Smith’s Future in the NRL Uncertain as Contract Nears Expiry

Brandon Smith’s tenure with the Sydney Roosters could be coming to an end, as the star forward’s contract approaches its conclusion at the end of the 2025 NRL season. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Smith’s management has initiated discussions with rival clubs, exploring potential options for his future.

The 28-year-old New Zealand international is currently sidelined due to a season-ending knee injury sustained in late 2024. He is not expected to return to action until midway through the 2025 season. As he enters the final year of his high-value deal with the Roosters, the club is reportedly reluctant to extend his contract on similar terms, creating speculation about his next destination.

Smith, a versatile player known for his ability to excel at both hooker and lock, has built an impressive career since his NRL debut with the Melbourne Storm in 2017. Over 148 games, primarily with the Storm, he established himself as one of the league’s premier forwards. He has also represented New Zealand in 13 international matches, further enhancing his reputation as a world-class talent.

Last week, reports emerged that Smith’s management had reached out to other NRL clubs, encouraging them to present offers for the dynamic forward. Despite his ongoing recovery, which will be closely monitored in the coming months, Smith’s skillset and experience are expected to make him a sought-after player in the league.

The Sydney Roosters are yet to confirm their position on Smith’s future, but with rival clubs now expressing interest, the next chapter of his career could be set to unfold elsewhere in the NRL.
