Wigan Warriors Claim BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year Award After Historic Quadruple

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet has expressed his satisfaction at rugby league finally receiving overdue recognition following his team’s triumph at the 2024 BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) Awards.

The Warriors were crowned Team of the Year after a historic season, marking the first rugby league team to win the award in 18 years and only the third time in the accolade’s 64-year history. Wigan captain Liam Farrell accepted the award from rugby league legend Martin Offiah, who last presented the trophy to Wigan in 1994.

Peet, who was also shortlisted for Coach of the Year, reflected on the significance of the achievement:

“I’ve watched this programme for many years, waiting for the rugby league segment. Aside from the occasional mention, it often felt like the sport was overlooked. But this recognition, after our achievements, has brought more attention to the game, which is great for the sport as a whole.”

The Warriors secured their place in history by completing an unprecedented quadruple. Their victories included defeating NRL champions Penrith Panthers in the World Club Challenge, overcoming Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup final, clinching the League Leaders’ Shield, and successfully defending their Super League title with a Grand Final win over Hull KR.

Peet acknowledged the effort from other teams that contributed to an exciting season:

“It has been a successful season, but it wasn’t all plain sailing. A lot of other teams made the competition strong. It’s been a great year for Super League and international rugby league, and now it’s about building on this momentum.”

The Warriors’ achievements were highlighted in a feature presented by celebrity chef Michel Roux Jr. during the awards ceremony, adding a touch of flair to their recognition. The spotlight on rugby league was further enhanced by plans to continue raising the sport’s profile, including a Super League game in Las Vegas against Warrington on March 1, alongside an NRL doubleheader.

Looking ahead, Peet expressed optimism about the sport’s future:

“With events like the Las Vegas game, the Ashes series, and the upcoming 2026 World Cup, rugby league is positioning itself well. The work being done by organizations like IMG is paving the way for the sport’s growth. It’s about ensuring we take the right steps moving forward.”

This victory comes at a critical time for rugby league, as fans and players alike celebrate the recognition of their sport on one of the UK’s biggest sporting stages. For Wigan Warriors, this award cements their place as one of the most successful clubs in rugby league history.
