Joseph Sellers, an attorney representing several of the plaintiffs, highlighted the significance of these cases, stating, “These cases, unlike the criminal case, will not be affected by the election. Our clients suffered real injuries that entitle them to relief, but also seek accountability for President Trump’s role in the events surrounding January 6.”

While Trump’s legal team awaits a ruling on whether his presidential immunity will extend to these civil suits, an unfavorable decision could result in significant financial penalties for the former president, potentially amounting to tens of millions of dollars in damages to victims of the riot.

Sellers further noted that these cases should proceed to trial during Trump’s second term, regardless of his political status. He emphasized, “We’re not suggesting that the president be treated like any other defendant, but that should not stop the cases from proceeding to trial.”
