California Wildfires: Pro Sports Teams Unite for $8 Million Donation to Aid Victims and First Responders
Twelve professional sports teams in California have pledged a combined donation of over $8 million to assist victims and first responders impacted by the devastating wildfires currently ravaging Los Angeles County. Among the contributors are Angel City FC, the Angels, Chargers, Clippers, Dodgers, Ducks, Galaxy, Kings, LAFC, Lakers, Rams, and Sparks.
The fires, including the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire, have destroyed thousands of homes and claimed the lives of 25 individuals, predominantly elderly residents, according to the Los Angeles Times. The Palisades Fire, which has burned over 23,000 acres, is only 14% contained, while the Eaton Fire in Altadena has reached 33% containment after six days of burning.
Joint Relief Efforts
The donation will be distributed to several organizations actively involved in relief and recovery efforts, including the American Red Cross, Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, California Fire Foundation, Eaton Canyon Fire Relief and Recovery Fund, World Central Kitchen, California Community Foundation Wildfire Recovery Fund, Team Rubicon, and various local animal rescue groups.
In addition to financial contributions, the teams have partnered with Fanatics and the Fanatics Foundation to donate $3 million worth of merchandise to those displaced by the fires. The #LAStrong merch line has been launched to raise additional funds, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross and the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation.
Upcoming Distribution Events
Three distribution events are scheduled for Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dodger Stadium, SoFi Stadium, and BMO Stadium. These events will provide evacuees with donated apparel, personal hygiene kits, school supplies, sneakers, and other essential items. Team community partners will also be on-site to support those in need.
Impact on Local Sports
The wildfires have disrupted professional sporting events in the area. The Kings and Lakers postponed games last week, and the Rams relocated their Monday night game against the Vikings to Glendale, Arizona.
Statements from Teams
The Los Angeles Angels expressed their commitment to the cause in a statement:
“We’re proud to join our local sports community in supporting those affected by the fires in Los Angeles. #LAStrong ❤️”
The Los Angeles Dodgers also reaffirmed their solidarity with the community:
“For LA. 💙”
With thousands displaced and the fires continuing to burn, California’s sports community has come together to support recovery efforts and provide aid to those most affected by this tragedy.
