Parramatta Eels Partner with URBNSURF to Promote Summer Water Safety

The Parramatta Eels have joined forces with URBNSURF to equip Western Sydney families with essential water safety skills through their “Play Safe This Summer” initiative.

In the lead-up to the summer holidays, the partnership facilitated a water safety program for over 100 Year 5 and 6 students and teachers from Dundas Public School. The event took place at URBNSURF’s facility in Sydney Olympic Park, offering hands-on lessons in surf and water safety.

Participants learned critical skills, including identifying rip currents, mastering the life-saving “float to survive” technique, and practicing safe beach entry. The session also included surf skills and beach rescue drills, helping students build confidence and competence in aquatic environments.

This initiative comes in response to a concerning rise in drowning incidents in Australia, with 323 deaths recorded in the past year—16% higher than the 10-year average. Western Sydney residents are particularly vulnerable, with drowning rates twice as high as other regions in New South Wales. Many incidents involve individuals from migrant backgrounds, highlighting the importance of targeted education.

Dundas Public School, located in the Parramatta local government area, reflects the multicultural fabric of the region, with 68% of its students coming from language backgrounds other than English. This diversity includes Korean, Chinese, and Indian communities.

The collaboration with URBNSURF, which has already trained over 2,000 students in water safety, underscores the Parramatta Eels’ commitment to community well-being. By empowering young people with knowledge and practical skills, the program aims to reduce water-related risks and make summer safer for everyone.

As temperatures rise, the Parramatta Eels are urging the community to “Play Safe This Summer” and take proactive measures to prevent drowning. Together, education and vigilance can ensure a safer season for families across Western Sydney.
