Triston Casas Addresses Trade Rumors Amid Red Sox’s Offseason Move

First baseman Triston Casas has been a recurring name in trade rumors this offseason, even as Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has adamantly denied that the young slugger is being shopped. With Boston reportedly exploring the markets for Alex Bregman and Nolan Arenado, speculation has grown about how an additional infield acquisition might impact Casas’s future with the team.

Speaking to reporters, Casas, who turns 25 soon, acknowledged the potential of being traded but maintained a level-headed approach. According to Christopher Smith of MassLive, Casas expressed understanding that a trade could be in the organization’s best interest under the right circumstances. Despite the speculation, Casas revealed that the Red Sox assured him there is no substance to the rumors.

“I love Boston,” Casas said. “I love everything about it, and they’ve welcomed me with open arms since my first professional day. It would be great to play here as long as possible. I love the fans, and they welcome me generously all the time. So, I would love to play the rest of my career here. But if it’s elsewhere, I just feel like March 28, no matter where it’s at, I’m going to be playing major league games. So, I just focus on that.”

Casas emphasized that the trade rumors do not affect him mentally and reiterated his desire to remain in Boston. This stance follows reported extension discussions between Casas and the organization last year, which ultimately did not result in a deal. Casas confirmed at the Red Sox’s Fenway Fest event that no extension talks have occurred since last winter, as noted by Rob Bradford of WEEI.

The lack of recent negotiations is unsurprising given Casas’s challenging 2024 season. After suffering a ribcage cartilage injury that sidelined him for a significant portion of the year, Casas posted a .241/.337/.462 slash line with a concerning 31.7% strikeout rate. While his overall offensive production yielded a respectable 119 wRC+, it marked a decline from the 130 wRC+ he posted in 2023. The injury-marred season has likely led the Red Sox to adopt a cautious approach before committing to a long-term deal with the first baseman.

Meanwhile, Boston’s reported interest in Bregman and Arenado has fueled speculation about the team’s infield alignment. Adding either player would potentially require moving third baseman Rafael Devers to first base, which could impact Casas’s role. Manager Alex Cora addressed this possibility during Fenway Fest, stating that while no discussions have taken place with Devers about changing positions, the team would consult him before pursuing any lineup changes. This aligns with Breslow’s earlier comments indicating no current plans to move Devers off third base.

As the offseason progresses, the Red Sox appear to be balancing their pursuit of infield reinforcements with careful consideration of their current roster. For Casas, the focus remains on preparing for the upcoming season, wherever thatmay take him.
