In a surprising turn of events, Arkansas Razorbacks quarterback Taylen Green has announced his decision to forgo his remaining collegiate eligibility and declare for the 2025 NFL Draft. This announcement comes just two months after Green had committed to returning to Arkansas for the 2025 season, a promise that had energized the Razorbacks’ fan base and coaching staff.

Green’s initial declaration to return was made in December 2024, following a season where he showcased his dual-threat capabilities. He completed 219 of 360 passes, amassing 2,813 yards with 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions. On the ground, he contributed 521 yards and seven touchdowns on 141 carries. His performance was pivotal in several key matchups, including a standout game against Mississippi State, where he became the first Arkansas quarterback since 2010 to throw for five touchdowns and rush for one in a single game.

In his December statement, Green expressed gratitude towards head coach Sam Pittman and offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, highlighting their unwavering support and leadership. He also acknowledged the role of his family in his journey, stating, “I’m incredibly grateful to be returning back to the University of Arkansas for my final collegiate season.”

However, as the NFL Draft declaration deadline approached, Green reevaluated his position. Factors influencing his decision likely included his rising draft stock, feedback from NFL scouts, and the potential for injury in another collegiate season. By mid-January 2025, Green had officially declared for the NFL Draft, joining 55 other players granted special eligibility.

In an emotional farewell message to Razorback Nation, Green conveyed his heartfelt appreciation:

> “To the University of Arkansas, my teammates, coaches, and the incredible fans—thank you for embracing me and allowing me to call Fayetteville home. This decision was not made lightly, but after much reflection, I believe it’s the right time to pursue my dream of playing in the NFL. I will carry the memories and lessons from Arkansas with me forever.”

This unexpected departure leaves the Razorbacks facing significant challenges. The team must now identify a new starting quarterback and address other roster gaps, especially with key players entering the transfer portal or declaring for the draft. The coaching staff’s immediate focus will be on recruitment and player development to fill the void left by Green’s exit.

For the fans, Green’s change of heart is a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of college athletics. While his departure is a setback, the Razorback community remains hopeful, rallying behind the team as they prepare for the upcoming season without their star quarterback.
