Eagles Extend Tight End’s Contract: Report!
The Philadelphia Eagles had a disappointing conclusion to their 2023 season, starting strong with a 10-1 record but faltering down the stretch, losing five of their last six games and slipping to the 5th seed. They were ultimately defeated by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round.
Despite this, the Eagles made a move to retain one of their tight ends.
Philadelphia reached an agreement on a 1-year contract extension with Albert Okwuegbunam, a young tight end who has shown promise in his NFL career.
Here’s a brief overview of Okwuegbunam’s journey in the NFL:
Okwuegbunam began his NFL career with the Denver Broncos, drafted in the 4th round, 118th overall, in the 2020 NFL Draft.
In his rookie season, he appeared in four games, making 11 receptions for 121 yards and one touchdown before suffering an ACL tear in Week 9.
During his second season, Okwuegbunam played in 14 games, tallying 33 receptions for 330 yards and two touchdowns but missed three games due to a hamstring injury.
His third season saw him in action for eight games, making ten receptions for 95 yards and one touchdown, with nine games as a healthy scratch.
Denver traded Okwuegbunam and a 2025 seventh-round pick to Philadelphia for a 2025 sixth-round pick.
In his first season with the Eagles, Okwuegbunam was limited to just four games due to being a healthy scratch for 11 out of 13 games and a hamstring injury sidelining him for the remaining two games. He did not record any receptions in the limited offensive snaps he played.
Heading into the next season, Okwuegbunam will need to compete for the TE2 spot against Jack Stoll and Grant Calcaterra, with the opportunity to earn a role in the offense under the team’s new offensive coordinator.
