2024 Comeback

The NFL landscape is abuzz with speculation following the conclusion of the NFL Combine, a pivotal event that sets the stage for offseason moves and roster adjustments. Among the latest reports swirling around, one intriguing tidbit emerged: the Pittsburgh Steelers might be contemplating the possibility of parting ways with wide receiver Diontae Johnson.

However, today brought forth another twist in the Steelers’ wide receiver saga. According to Ari Meirov from The 33rd Team, the Steelers are mulling over the prospect of retaining Allen Robinson II on their roster for the upcoming 2024 season. Yet, there’s a catch—they are leaning towards keeping him at a reduced salary. Meirov revealed that discussions between Robinson’s representatives and Steelers officials took place during the combine held in Indianapolis.

At present, Robinson carries a significant cap hit of $11,917,500 for the 2024 season, as indicated by Spotrac. Should the Steelers opt to release him, a dead cap hit of $1,917,500 would come into play.

Reflecting on Robinson’s recent performance with the Steelers paints a mixed picture. While his statistical output in the 2023 season—34 receptions for 280 yards and no touchdowns—fell short of expectations, it’s worth noting that it stands as one of the least productive seasons of his career, discounting a one-game stint back in 2017 with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Despite his underwhelming numbers, Robinson has garnered praise for his professionalism and contributions as a blocker on the field. Standing at an imposing 6’2″ and weighing 220 pounds, he fits the physical profile favored by the Steelers’ new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith.

As the offseason unfolds, the Steelers find themselves at a crossroads, balancing the desire to maintain roster continuity with the need to navigate salary cap constraints and optimize their lineup for success in the upcoming season. The outcome of these deliberations could have far-reaching implications for the team’s offensive strategy and overall performance in the 2024 campaign.
