Yankees Star: No Contract Extension Talks Yet!

TAMPA — Gleyber Torres is embarking on what could potentially be his final season with the Yankees, and as of now, there have been no discussions regarding his future in The Bronx.

Brian Cashman revealed Thursday that the Yankees have not engaged in any contract extension talks with Torres thus far.

“He’s slated to be our second baseman for the upcoming season,” Cashman stated. “But there haven’t been any discussions about anything beyond that.”

Torres, 27, is coming off a solid season where he proved to be one of the Yankees’ most reliable hitters, aside from Aaron Judge.

However, the Yankees have generally refrained from offering contract extensions, with their recent deals for Aaron Hicks and Luis Severino not yielding favorable outcomes.

When asked if discussions about extending Torres might occur later in the year, Cashman remained noncommittal.

“Who knows? I can’t say,” he remarked. “As of now, there haven’t been any talks on that front.”

Aside from his memorable no-hitter, Corey Kluber left a lasting impression during his brief tenure as a Yankee.

Now retired, the two-time Cy Young winner is in preliminary discussions about potentially returning to the organization in an advisory capacity.

“We’re in the early stages of that. We’ve had initial talks,” Cashman disclosed, adding that he hasn’t spoken directly to Kluber about the opportunity. “Corey’s a talented retired pitcher now. He made a significant impact on our clubhouse during his time here and threw a no-hitter for us. We’re exploring potential avenues.”

While Kluber is exploring options with other teams, he resides in Tampa and maintains a close relationship with former Cleveland teammate Nick Swisher, who serves as a special advisor to Cashman. Kluber has been spotted at the Yankees’ player development complex in recent days, Cashman noted.

Lou Trivino officially rejoined the Yankees on Wednesday after signing a one-year, $1.5 million deal with a $5 million team option for 2025, three months after being non-tendered.

“I was joking with everyone, ‘If I just show up, they have to give me a contract,’” Trivino quipped, recalling his physical at Steinbrenner Field.

Trivino, currently rehabbing from UCL reconstruction surgery, is progressing well and aims to return to action midway through the season.

Reliever Scott Effross provided an update on his back surgery, revealing it was a microdiscectomy on the L4 and L5 discs. Despite initial attempts to manage the discomfort conservatively, surgery became necessary. Effross has resumed his throwing program and is targeting a return later this summer, remaining optimistic about contributing to the team’s World Series aspirations.
