Yankees new acquisition

The New York Yankees have made a move to bolster their pitching staff by claiming Matt Gage off waivers from the Astros, as reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post. This acquisition comes after the Astros designated the left-handed reliever for assignment upon signing Josh Hader earlier this month. To create space for Gage on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have designated infielder/outfielder Diego Castillo for assignment.

Matt Gage, who is on the verge of turning 31 next month, primarily spent the 2023 season in Triple-A but made a notable impact with the Astros when called upon due to an injury to Luis García. In his five appearances with the Astros, Gage demonstrated his prowess by posting a 2.70 ERA and recording eight strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.

During his tenure with the Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys, Gage participated in 34 games, accumulating a 4.82 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. In this span, he showcased his ability with 39 strikeouts over 37 1/3 innings.

Notably, Matt Gage, a native of New York, has previously been associated with various MLB organizations, including the Giants, Mets, Diamondbacks, and Blue Jays. This waiver claim represents the Yankees’ proactive effort to strengthen their pitching depth for the upcoming season.
