Joel Tomkins Hails Wigan Warriors Prospect Taylor Kerr, Comparing Him to Club Legend Sean O’Loughlin

Former Wigan Warriors star Joel Tomkins has drawn comparisons between rising talent Taylor Kerr and club legend Sean O’Loughlin, praising the 18-year-old for his skill and dedication. Kerr, a promising loose forward, is among five academy players set to join Wigan’s senior squad for the 2025 Super League season after impressing in the youth ranks.

Tomkins, 37, recently departed his role as Wigan’s head of youth to join Catalans Dragons as a defence coach. Reflecting on Kerr’s development, he highlighted the teenager’s potential to follow in the footsteps of O’Loughlin, who captained Wigan to 10 major trophies during a distinguished 19-year playing career before transitioning into coaching.

“Taylor [Kerr] is probably the one who stands out for me,” Tomkins stated. “He’s definitely got a bit of Sean O’Loughlin about him. There are similarities and differences, but what sets him apart is his eagerness to learn. He has a great attitude, plays the game the right way, and truly enjoys his rugby.”

Kerr, alongside Noah Hodkinson, Nathan Lowe, Lukas Mason, and Kian McDermott, earned promotion to the first team after their academy side triumphed over St Helens 15-12 in the Grand Final earlier this year. The victory marked another milestone for the Wigan youth system, which Tomkins believes is pivotal to the club’s ongoing success.

“The system at Wigan is outstanding,” Tomkins added. “With Matt Peet coming through that system himself, he understands its value and invests significant time and effort into it, supported by Kris Radlinski and Mike Danson. The club is in a special place, and the youth setup ensures its success for at least another decade.”

Tomkins also noted the depth of talent in Wigan’s academy, citing players like George O’Loughlin and upcoming under-16s prospects as evidence of the club’s bright future.

Kerr’s elevation to the senior squad is a testament to Wigan’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talent, with the club’s youth system continuing to produce players capable of making an impact at the highest level.
