Detroit Lions Eye Defensive Line Prospects at NFL Combine!
The NFL Scouting Combine provides an opportunity for teams to assess the top prospects entering the league and conduct interviews with them, making it a crucial week for the Detroit Lions. One area where the Lions are looking to strengthen is the defensive interior, so general manager Brad Holmes and his team will be closely evaluating several top defensive line prospects during the combine. The defensive linemen are scheduled to showcase their skills on February 29, the first day of on-field activities in Indianapolis. Here are five defensive line prospects that the Lions may consider at the combine:
1. T’Vondre Sweat, Texas: Sweat has gained attention from the Lions following an impressive performance at the Senior Bowl. While his teammate Byron Murphy II is seen as a first-round pick, Sweat has also emerged as a potential Day 1 selection. A strong showing in agility tests at the combine could solidify his draft stock, as he has already demonstrated strength and power.
2. Ruke Orhorhoro, Clemson: Orhorhoro brings a formidable pass-rush presence on the interior, with five sacks last season at Clemson. Standing at 6-foot-4, he effectively utilizes his size to maintain low pad level, making him a challenging matchup for offensive linemen. While he excels with a bull-rush, he can benefit from expanding his pass-rush moves and enhancing his hand strength.
3. Braden Fiske, Florida State: Fiske transitioned from Western Michigan to Florida State and showcased his abilities with six sacks and nine tackles for loss in 2023. A strong performer in the strength components, he will be closely watched during agility tests to gauge his footwork and potential to rise in draft rankings.
4. Mekhi Wingo, LSU: Playing alongside highly regarded teammate Maason Smith, Wingo has still made an impact with three sacks and 14 total pressures in 2023. As a three-technique player with a high motor, he brings leadership qualities and would be a cultural fit for the Lions. Demonstrating athletic ability during on-field segments will be crucial for his draft stock.
5. Jer’Zhan Newton, Illinois: Newton is considered one of the top defensive tackle prospects in the class, known for his potential Pro Bowl caliber talent. Despite concerns about his short arm length, he has excelled with 27.5 tackles for loss and 18 sacks over four seasons at Illinois. With light feet and heavy hands, he presents a challenge for opponents and will be closely evaluated at the combine.
