At 48, Tiger Woods received a prestigious award from the USGA at a ceremony in Pinehurst, North Carolina, on Tuesday night. Before Woods took the podium, his 15-year-old son, Charlie, humorously remarked, “Well, I guess I’ll start my speech by saying Charlie just said don’t let my head get too big,” prompting a smile from Woods.

Woods’ family, including Charlie, his 16-year-old daughter Samantha, and his 80-year-old mother Kultida, were in attendance. The 15-time major champion expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the significance of the award and the esteemed previous recipients he admired through various mediums and personal interactions.

Reflecting on his career, Woods mentioned his nine USGA titles, including three consecutive US Junior Amateurs, three straight US Amateurs, and US Open victories at Pebble Beach (2000), Bethpage Black (2002), and Torrey Pines (2008).

Woods also paid a heartfelt tribute to his mother, Tida, recalling the immense pressure he felt to win his last US Amateur because she attended for the first time. He emphasized her crucial role in his success, stating, “My mom doesn’t get enough credit. Everyone always thought it was me and dad on the road, which it was, but mom was at home. Mom has been there my entire life, she’s been there through thick and thin.”

Woods concluded by dedicating the award to his mother, acknowledging her unwavering support that enabled him to pursue his dreams, and then joined his family for hugs offstage.

Charlie has been actively helping his father with his golf game at this week’s US Open, observed assisting on the range and short game area. This Bob Jones Award adds to Woods’ recent honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019 and his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2022.
