Are The Yankees Broke?

on

I enjoy writing about pitchers, not just the standout ones, but the intriguing, overlooked, and those who unexpectedly find a place in the bullpen. The Yankees excel at discovering bullpen aces, whether through internal development or shrewd trades and free-agent acquisitions.

Recently, Estee Rivera highlighted some “homegrown” candidates for a breakout in the Yankees’ bullpen next season. In this discussion, I’ll focus on the opposite direction—the afterthoughts, returnees from injury, non-roster invites, and minor league signings who often emerge unexpectedly and make significant contributions with a 1.26 ERA or similar.

Luis Gil:

Previously regarded as a “dark horse” for a rotation spot, Gil’s talent, MLB experience, improved health, and place on the 40-man roster make him a potential impact player in 2024. While some see him as a starter, given his strike-throwing challenges, health issues, and limited pitch repertoire, utilizing him in the bullpen could be a more direct and effective approach.

Yerry De Los Santos:

A 26-year-old right-hander recently signed by the Yankees, De Los Santos exhibits qualities reminiscent of Jimmy Cordero, showcasing a significant sinker with notable drop and run. Despite inconsistencies in his slider, he achieved a 3.33 ERA and a 54.2% grounder rate in 22 appearances last season. Refinement of his mechanics could make him a formidable sinkerballer for the Yankees.

Nick Burdi:

Known for his electric stuff, Burdi’s injury history has hindered his consistent performance. However, a strong return in 2023, featuring a 98 mph fastball and an effective slider, suggests high-leverage potential if he can stay healthy.

Nick Ramirez:

Having been with the team last year, Ramirez offers stability. Despite unexciting stuff, his unique lefty delivery and unorthodox pitch traits contributed to a solid 2.66 ERA in 32 appearances. With options remaining, Ramirez may not make the Opening Day roster, but he could fill a role in the bullpen, especially with the absence of Wandy Peralta.

The Yankees’ pitching staff might undergo further changes for the upcoming season, with uncertainties in both the rotation and bullpen. Whether it’s a big-name addition or smaller acquisitions, there’s room for improvement and opportunities for the coaching staff to unearth hidden gems in the pitching arsenal.
