Official Announcement: Eels Secure Trio of Promising Young Talents on Long-Term Contracts.
The Parramatta Eels have bolstered their future prospects by signing three highly regarded young players—Lincoln Fletcher, Ryda Talagi, and Lachlan Coinakis—to contract extensions that will keep them at the club through the end of the 2027 NRL season. This significant move comes as the Eels transition into a new chapter under incoming head coach Jason Ryles, following the recent departures of stalwarts Brad Arthur, Clint Gutherson, and Reagan Campbell-Gillard.
The trio, all selected for the 2024 Australian Schoolboys team, have emerged from Parramatta’s well-regarded player development pathways and bring an impressive track record from junior competitions. Each player has honed his skills locally, progressing through the club’s Harold Matthews Cup and SG Ball Cup systems. The Eels’ investment in these young athletes underscores their commitment to nurturing talent from within the district.
Lincoln Fletcher, a halfback, made waves this season as the second-highest point scorer in the Harold Matthews Cup. Lachlan Coinakis, despite missing the start of the SG Ball Cup season due to injury, showcased his potential in the games he played, marking himself as a player to watch. Meanwhile, Ryda Talagi, who captained the Eels’ U16 team in 2023, led by example as a forward in the Harold Matthews Cup this year and earned the Eels’ Harold Matthews Cup Best Forward Award. Ryda is also the younger brother of Blaize Talagi, a player who previously attracted attention from clubs such as the Penrith Panthers and St George Illawarra Dragons.
Mark O’Neill, the Eels’ General Manager of Football, praised the trio’s achievements and underscored the club’s dedication to fostering homegrown talent. “Lincoln, Ryda, and Lachlan are impressive young athletes who have truly earned their Australian Schoolboys honors this year. We remain committed to the continued development of our players and look forward with great anticipation as they progress through the grades,” O’Neill stated.
Before advancing to the NRL squad, the three will begin their 2024 season with the Eels’ SG Ball Cup side, with the club aiming to replicate the pathway of players like Blaize Talagi and Ethan Sanders, who also advanced through the Eels’ development system before moving on to the Panthers and Canberra Raiders, respectively.
With this latest commitment to player development, the Parramatta Eels are sending a clear message about their focus on the future, ensuring that the club’s pipeline of talent remains strong and ready for NRL contention in the years ahead.
