Yankees Sign Ex-Cubs Catcher To…..

The New York Yankees remain active in their roster management, making further moves to enhance both their major league team and organizational depth. While the team may have concluded its high-profile, expensive acquisitions, it continues to bolster its roster. The latest addition to the Yankees’ fold is Luis Torrens, a catcher who has previously played for the San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, and Chicago Cubs. This signing, confirmed through the New York Yankees’ transaction log, marks Torrens’ return to the organization where he initially signed as an international free agent in 2012.

Torrens embarked on his professional career in 2013 with the Gulf Coast League Yankees 2 and remained with the Yankees’ organization until the conclusion of the 2016 season. In the 2016 Rule-5 Draft, the San Diego Padres selected the 27-year-old catcher, leading to his major league debut with San Diego in 2017. Torrens has since navigated between the big leagues and the minors, spending time with the Mariners and Cubs in addition to his tenure with the Padres.

The catcher appeared in 18 games in the Majors during the previous season, registering a slash line of .250/.300/.357 while playing for the Cubs and Mariners. Over the course of his career, Torrens has participated in 269 big league games, contributing 19 home runs, 79 runs batted in, and a slash line of .227/.289/.354.

While Torrens may not assume a prominent role with the Yankees in 2024, his addition adds valuable depth to the organization. With Jose Trevino and Austin Wells likely to be in the big leagues next season, Torrens provides an additional option that could prove beneficial in the event of injuries or other unforeseen circumstances. Although his immediate impact may be limited, Torrens’ signing underscores the Yankees’ commitment to building a well-rounded and resilient roster.
