There’s no telling what to expect…
OWINGS MILLS, Md. — John Harbaugh is uncertain about what to anticipate from Dalvin Cook in the upcoming weekend, but the Baltimore coach seems eager to put him on the field and observe his performance.
“It’s new. We haven’t seen him out there,” Harbaugh conveyed to reporters on Thursday. “Just like you guys haven’t seen him, we haven’t seen him.”
Cook, who had a lackluster 15-game stint with the New York Jets this season, was waived before joining Baltimore’s practice squad and subsequently signing with the 53-man roster this week. Harbaugh is considering Cook as a potential option for Saturday’s postseason opener against the Houston Texans.
“I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for him and for us,” Harbaugh stated. “We’ll be looking forward to seeing how he does.”
Despite the Ravens boasting the best regular-season record in the NFL and a potent offense led by MVP candidate Lamar Jackson, there has been a revolving door at running back due to significant injuries. J.K. Dobbins suffered an Achilles tendon injury in Week 1, ending his season. Undrafted rookie Keaton Mitchell emerged as a dynamic playmaker but landed on injured reserve with a knee injury.
Gus Edwards has been a reliable back, rushing for 810 yards and 13 touchdowns during the regular season, but the addition of Cook, with four 1,000-yard rushing seasons to his name, could provide an extra dimension to the Ravens’ running game.
“I’m dialed up. I’m ready to give it all I have — everything I have in the tank,” Cook expressed. “It’s the playoffs, man.”
Cook’s situation is unusual, attempting to contribute to a new team solely for the postseason. Sportradar notes that only two running backs since at least 1948 have made their franchise debut in a playoff game and rushed for positive yardage.
Having rushed for over 1,100 yards just last season with the Minnesota Vikings, Cook may find rejuvenation in transitioning from New York’s offense to Baltimore’s.
“They call (my) number, that’s where I’m going. I’m going to be on the field. I’m ready to make a play,” Cook declared. “But for me though, honestly, Gus, Justice, they put the work in all year. You’ve got to credit those guys, so whatever my role is, whatever they call upon me, they’ll get a thousand percent out of Dalvin.”
In other team news, the Ravens did not activate TE Mark Andrews (ankle) from injured reserve, and they signed RB Melvin Gordon to the practice squad after his recent release earlier in the week.
