What about Florian Wirtz next? The ten most recent Premier League champions’ worst acquisitions
When it comes to maintaining a great football team, it’s often said that the best time to bolster is when you’re winning.
However, not every player signed by a Premier League champion is able to compete on par with the team they join.
After winning the title the previous season, Liverpool’s summer spending binge is currently under a lot of scrutiny. Although there was a lot of excitement about how they bolstered their team, recent outcomes have made some wonder if they made too many changes. After winning the title the previous season, Liverpool’s summer spending binge is currently under a lot of scrutiny. Although there was a lot of excitement about how they bolstered their team, recent outcomes have made some wonder if they made too many changes. In 2025, Liverpool created history by adding a plethora of highly regarded new players to Arne Slot’s championship-winning team. They actually started the most expensive transfer window ever.
Their new players still have time to shine, but what if some don’t? Following their championship victories, TEAMtalk made the decision to examine the previous ten Premier League winners and select their worst summer acquisition. However, the most of their recent additions haven’t left a good impression. One noticeable exception is Hugo Ekitike, a former striker for Eintracht Frankfurt who already has a goal-scoring impact and seems dangerous.
However, players like Wirtz, Alexander Isak, and Milos Kerkez are all taking their time to defend their exorbitant transfer prices.
Given that Wirtz hasn’t scored or provided an assist in his first nine Premier League games, Liverpool supporters may have been the most disappointed with him thus far. Recall that in 31 Bundesliga games played for Bayer Leverkusen previous season, he contributed 23 goals.
Wirtz’s move into the offensive midfield position appears to have had an impact on Liverpool’s rhythm. There are currently more doubts than answers regarding him, but time is on his side and the club is still supporting him. He may even prove this early assessment to be foolish in the long term.
