Southampton tipped to seal Frank Lampard deal – ‘he’s immensely admired down here
Football League World’s “Terrace Talk” series includes personal commentary from FLW Fan Pundits on breaking news, teams, players, managers, possible signings, and other topics. This post is part of that series. Southampton has great expectations as they look for a new manager.
With just two victories in 13 Championship games with the Saints losing 2-0 at home to Preston North End, Will Still was fired after just five months in charge.
Everyone is now waiting to see who St. Mary’s administrators will bring in next. With Russell Martin in charge of 27 of Southampton’s 32 league victories since the takeover, Sport Republic has had poor luck hiring managers. However, Southampton is aiming high, and Frank Lampard, the manager of Coventry City, is at the top of their list of potential hires.
After dismal Premier League stints at Everton and Chelsea, Lampard has revitalized his managerial career at Coventry.
With the aim of going one step further than last year and securing promotion back to the top flight for the first time since 2001, the former Blues midfielder turned the Sky Blues from a relegation battler to a team that was only minutes away from a second play-off final in three years. He is currently leading the Championship in his first full season at the club.
In his statement, “If I had to pick anyone, it would be Frank Lampard,” the Saints fan pundit, who is admired by Sanders, speaks for all Southampton supporters.
“Observe his actions at Coventry; he is becoming a superb manager. It has long been the case that he is well admired down here.
“His actions there don’t surprise me. I think he’ll lead them up because he has a great, established core of players who have been there for a while and are moving in the right path.
It makes sense that Sanders would have the same doubts as any Championship supporter, but why would Lampard decide to leave his current team when he is obviously doing well?
“Would he really leave us a team that can get to the Premier League, a promotion charge?” he said.
“If you were a manager looking at us from the outside, you would be a little worried about how fast we go through them right now.”
Sanders thinks Lampard might at least speak with the former Premier League team in spite of this. Like Coventry did last season under their present boss, the Saints may mount a late promotion campaign with plenty of football left to play.
“We switch managers a lot, and other managers are hiring players, so we might not have what he needs,” he informed me.
“However, will he converse with them?” “I have no doubt that he will.”
Martin Sanders, a Saints fan commentator for FLW, thinks Lampard’s work is great and would love to see him in the St. Mary’s bench in January 2022. The Saints had six head coaches on staff at the time.
