Twist: Vikings 6-Time Pro Bowler to make a Jaw-Dropping Move!

Several prominent players from the Minnesota Vikings could either hit the free agency market or face potential cuts as free agency approaches in less than two months. One such player under scrutiny is safety Harrison Smith, a 12-year NFL veteran and six-time Pro Bowler who will turn 35 in February. Last year, Smith restructured his deal to stay with the Vikings in 2023, and it’s suggested that a similar adjustment might be necessary to avoid being cut this offseason.

Despite praise from defensive coordinator Brian Flores for Smith’s contributions at the end of the season, his projected cap hit of approximately $19.2 million for 2024 appears out of alignment with his production. A pay cut, similar to the one accepted last offseason, is proposed if Smith seeks to extend his career, potentially saving the Vikings a significant amount, around $10 million, in cap space for the upcoming season.

Smith, who is under a $64 million extension with two years remaining, becomes a potential cut candidate if he doesn’t agree to a reduced salary. The Vikings could save $11.4 million off the salary cap by releasing him outright, or $15.3 million with a post-June 1 designation. With the Vikings having over $29 million in current salary cap space, a move to cut Smith could provide financial flexibility, especially as the franchise navigates the impending free agency of key players like quarterback Kirk Cousins and top edge-rusher Danielle Hunter.

The possibility of extending either Cousins or Hunter becomes more viable if the Vikings gain an extra $15 million by parting ways with Smith this summer. Additionally, if Smith decides to retire, it would offer an alternative resolution, albeit with financial implications. Smith has hinted at the possibility of retirement due to the toll of a lengthy NFL career, citing physical discomfort, particularly with his shoulder. The Vikings face critical decisions in managing their roster and salary cap, and Smith’s situation plays a crucial role in their offseason strategy.
